Prophet Muhammad ﷺ Marriage with Khadijah(RA)

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ married Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (RA) at the age of 25 years old. This marriage was a turning point in his life and remains one of the most inspiring unions in history. It was not only a personal relationship of love, respect, and loyalty but also a foundation for his mission as the final Messenger of Allah.

Background of Khadijah (RA):

Khadijah (RA) was a noblewoman of Quraysh, born into a respected family. She was known in Makkah as “al-Ṭāhirah” (the Pure Woman) because of her chastity, dignity, and virtuous character.

She was also a successful and wealthy merchant. Many men in Makkah admired her not only for her wealth but also for her intelligence and honor. However, Khadijah (RA) was not interested in marrying anyone until she found in Muhammad ﷺ the qualities she valued most: honesty, integrity, and trustworthiness.

How They Met:

As a merchant, Khadijah (RA) often sent trade caravans to Syria and Yemen. When she heard about Muhammad ﷺ’s honesty and reputation as al-Amīn (the Trustworthy), she hired him to manage one of her caravans.

Muhammad ﷺ traveled with her servant, Maysarah, and conducted business with utmost honesty and success. During this trip, Maysarah observed Muhammad’s ﷺ noble character, his refusal to cheat or deceive, and even miraculous signs of divine protection over him.

When they returned, Khadijah (RA) was deeply impressed. She realized that Muhammad ﷺ was not like other men of Quraysh who often pursued wealth, arrogance, and immorality. Instead, he was a man of humility, integrity, and noble character.

The Proposal and Marriage:

Khadijah (RA) expressed her admiration and interest in marriage through a close friend. Muhammad ﷺ agreed, and the marriage proposal was formally made. At the time:

Muhammad ﷺ was 25 years old.

Khadijah (RA) was 40 years old (according to the majority of reports).

Their marriage was celebrated with the approval of both families. Despite the age difference, their relationship was full of love, respect, and loyalty.

Life Together:

The marriage between Muhammad ﷺ and Khadijah (RA) lasted for 25 years, until her death. During that time:

Muhammad ﷺ never married another woman while Khadijah (RA) was alive.

She was his biggest source of comfort and support, especially during the early years of prophethood.

Together they had several children, including Qāsim, Zaynab, Ruqayyah, Umm Kulthūm, Fāṭimah, and ʿAbdullāh.

Khadijah’s Support After Prophethood:

One of the most beautiful aspects of their marriage was Khadijah’s (RA) support after Muhammad ﷺ received the first revelation at age 40.

When the Prophet ﷺ returned from the cave of Ḥirā’, frightened and overwhelmed, saying: “Cover me, cover me!” it was Khadijah (RA) who calmed him and reassured him, saying:

> “By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you. You keep good relations with your family, you help the poor and needy, you serve your guests generously, and you assist those who are afflicted with calamities.” (Bukhari, Muslim)

Her words gave him strength and confidence at a time when he doubted himself.

She also took him to her cousin Waraqah ibn Nawfal, a Christian scholar who confirmed that Muhammad ﷺ was chosen as a prophet like Musa and Isa (peace be upon them).

Lessons from the Marriage:

1. Good character attracts blessings – Khadijah (RA) chose Muhammad ﷺ not for wealth or status, but for his honesty and noble character.

2. Marriage as a partnership – Their marriage was based on mutual respect, support, and loyalty, serving as a model for Muslim couples.

3. The value of emotional support – When the Prophet ﷺ was frightened after revelation, Khadijah’s reassurance strengthened him.

4. Loyalty in marriage – The Prophet ﷺ never forgot Khadijah (RA) even after her death. He often praised her, sent gifts to her friends, and remembered her sacrifices.

5. Age is not a barrier in marriage – Khadijah (RA) was older than Muhammad ﷺ, but their marriage was one of the most successful and blessed in history.

---

CONCLUSION:

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ married Khadijah (RA) at the age of 25 years old, while she was around 40 years old. Their marriage was built on honesty, trust, and mutual respect. Khadijah (RA) played a crucial role in supporting the Prophet ﷺ emotionally, spiritually, and materially, especially during the early years of Islam.

This union remains one of the greatest examples of marital harmony and loyalty in history. It shows that the foundation of a strong marriage is not wealth, beauty, or status, but rather faith, trust, and mutual support.
